Structural analysis of a nuclear island to assess the strength and ductility capacities of the entire system using ABAQUS for AP1000 design of Westinghouse Nuclear. Global and local models are developed by modeling the Reinforced Concrete (RC) and Steel Composite (SC) portions of the structure individually using respective nonlinear material models.
-
Numerical modeling and defect assessment of deep mixing method (DMM) foundations for Angola LNG Project. Nonlinear finite element program ABAQUS is utilized for the 3D modeling of the foundation system (concrete slab and DMM columns) together with the surrounding soil. Interaction between the concrete mat and the DMM columns, concrete mat and surrounding soil and DMM columns and surrounding soil were explicitly modeled during the analysis. Stresses on the concrete mat and DMM columns were checked with the capacity values to ensure the integrity of the foundation system.

Blast resistant design of buildings at various refineries. Quantifying overpressure and duration data with distance from a blast source, detailed non-linear analyses using ABAQUS software, evaluation of the performance of individual structural components, and the response of buildings and foundations within limits of deformation, strain, and stability under blast loading.

Installation analysis for Macondo Field (BP's Deepwater Horizon explosion in summer 2010) located in the Gulf of Mexico, in approximately 5000 ft of water. Project included the installation analysis of various four and six inch flexible jumpers with goosenecks and CVC tools attached at the ends. Static and dynamic analysis were performed for the critical incidences during the installation operations to check any infringement on minimum bend radius, moment, tension and compression limits on the lines. Deck operations were also checked due to the heavy nature of the end assemblies. Lay tables and required rigging lengths were produced for each line.
-
Installation analysis for Frade Field development located in the Northern Campos Basin in Brazil. Frade Project included installation analysis of flexible risers and well control umbilicals in water depths ranging between 3300 to 4000 ft. First stage of the analysis comprised of the installation analysis of static umbilicals and flexibles where static and dynamic analysis were performed for the critical incidences during the installation operations to check any infringement on minimum bend radius, moment, tension and compression limits on the lines. Second stage analysis included wet park, recovery and transfer analysis of the dynamic lines which will connect the field to the Frade FPSO. Similar analyses were performed for the second stage for the critical steps during wet park, recovery and transfer operations.
-
Spectral fatigue analysis of West Delta Platform located in Gulf of Mexico in approximately 370 ft water depth. Finite element structural analysis program SACS was used to model the jacket structure together with the deck. Transfer functions were constructed for the given scattered data and stress concentration factors for every joint were computed. Damage ratio for each joint was calculated from the service lives assessed by the program.
-
Installation analysis for the Bluewater Umbilical that will be installed on a MinDOC type floating platform for the Mirage Field in the Gulf of Mexico, in approximately 4000 ft water depth. The installation analysis consisted of all stages of the operation starting with deployment of the umbilical from the installation vessel and pull-in to the MinDOC platform to laydown of the entire umbilical section with an umbilical termination assembly (UTA) at the end with a curve lay. Minimum bend radius and maximum values for moment, tension and compression in the umbilical are checked for the integrity of the system.
-
Interference and clashing assessment for Daniel Boone Deepwater Development flexible riser and umbilical on the Front Runner Spar in the Gulf of Mexico. Interference assessment included clearance checks with adjacent riser, umbilical and existing top tension risers by static and dynamic analysis of the system taking into account vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and wake interaction effects. Interaction between the upstream and downstream lines is evaluated using the Huse wake deficit model in OrcaFlex. Impact of the flexible riser and umbilical on future risers that may be located at adjacent hang off points were also investigated by using three different riser types with varying cross-sections and connection orientations to Front Runner.

Stress analysis of a bend restrictor assembly to obtain the moment curvature relationship of the system. Bend restrictor geometry was modeled in ABAQUS as a hyperelastic material including the contact interface between the bend restrictor units. Stress concentration locations and possible fracture locations were also indentified. Later analysis results were compared to test results conducted at manufacturer’s facility.

Reassessment study for the riser configurations due to the change in riser cross-sectional properties for the Afren Okoro Setu Field Development. The riser system consisted of three flexible risers with nominal bores of 4 inches, 6 inches and 8 inches. All risers were positioned between the field wellhead platform (WHP) and an FPSO. Buoyancy and weight distributions were updated and the configurations are checked with the design environments.

Development of composite export riser configuration for North Arthit Development (NAD) Project, in approximately 80 m of water, offshore Thailand. First stage of the design included development of the riser steep S configuration and sizing and positioning of weight and buoyancy modules, static and dynamic analysis of the system with wave and current environments was then carried out in Orcaflex to confirm system adequacy in terms of minimum bend radius, tension and compression as well as seabed and vessel clearance. Subsequent to the Stage 1 analysis, information for buoyancy weight and bend stiffeners was supplied to manufacturers for component selection. The actual data from the manufacturer is incorporated into OrcaFlex models for the second stage of the design work and development of comparative lazy wave riser configurations.
-
Interference and clashing assessment for the Bass Lite steel catenary riser in 5800 ft of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Interference assessment included clearance checks with adjacent steel catenary riser and umbilical by static and dynamic analysis of the system taking into account vortex induced vibration and wake interaction effects. Wake interaction was assessed by drag reduction and drag enhancement using the Huse wave deficit model. Clashing investigations incorporated wake deficit effects, upstream riser drag amplification due to vortex shedding and riser VIV response. Clash impact energies were evaluated in between risers and umbilicals to confirm the energy levels did not exceed the energy absorption capacity of riser stakes, coatings and umbilical cross sections.
